Our Secret Is No Secret
In 2018 the UK used 100,000 tones of BBQ charcoal 95% was imported, what’s not obvious is that imported charcoal is manufactured at only 5-8% efficiency meaning about 2 million tones of trees were used. In contrast, our manufacturing efficiency is 28-40% thereby using less trees to give you a much better quality product and saving over 8 ton of CO2 of emissions per bag manufactured.
We pride ourselves in only offering the most sustainable bbq charcoal created from felled wood and re-using all of the gases emitted from the low-carbon process. We haven’t forgotten the time-honoured traditional approach of making charcoal, we have just improved the craft.
Our timber is harvested from healthy and sustainable British woodland with Grown in Britain certification, providing a vital habitat for native birds, animals and plants. We strictly source no wood from rainforest, unlike much of the charcoal sold in the UK.
The wood is then split and prepared for our specially-designed kilns. To verify sustainability, we know the British woodland source of every batch of timber we use. Charcoal is then produced by slow pyrolysis, the heating of wood in the absence of oxygen.
Our ‘Oxford process’ is as kind to the environment as can be. Our kilns have the lowest emissions of any we have seen. It’s all part of our pledge to produce the most natural possible product, every time.
Our small-batch fired charcoal is then graded by size for restaurant, domestic grill and biochar use, so you get the charcoal that’s right for you and your style of cooking.
You won’t find any sawdust, starch or coal in our charcoal packs. We don’t use nasty fire retardant chemicals, so the flavour isn’t affected and you can add more charcoal at any point without having to stop cooking.
